Hokoji Buddhist Community - Hokoji or Phoenix Light Temple is a family practice temple, founded by Kobun Chino Otogawa Roshi and students in 1983. Bu-tan Stan White is the current Temple Priest. Hokoji sits at 8030 feet in the foothills of the Sangre de Cristo Mountains near Taos, below El Salto mountain which Kobun named “Daisho-Zan” or “Great Holy Mountain”. Kobun's calligraphy in the left sidebar, "Dai-sho-Zan-Ho-ko-Ji", translates as "Great Holy Mountain Phoenix Light Temple". The fourth character "Ho" may also be translated as "Dharma". Hokoji offers monthly all day zazen practice on the Sunday nearest the full moon and four to five annual sesshins (please see Schedule). Each sesshin is led by a teacher (Sensei) who has received transmission in Kobun Roshi’s lineage. Vanja Palmers, of Switzerland, has been accepted by Kobun's students as his Dharma Heir. Kobun, who taught us to "trust ourselves" said "Hokoji belongs to those who use it." Kobun's calligraphy "Hoko-ji- A Buddhist Community" appears in the banner at the top of this page.
