Red River Ski and Snowboard Area, located right in the center of town - about 90 percent of Red River’s lodging is within walking distance from the slopes (or the town’s trolley-style bus will get you there!) and two out of six chairlifts rise directly from town.
Activities include skiing, snowmobiling, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, tubing (at the ski area after hours), sleigh rides, horseback riding (usually in late winter, early spring), massage, concerts, two-steppin’ and, naturally, shopping.
Shopping may be one of the favorite activities here, perhaps because of the many shops on and off main street spanning both ends of town – it’s better than any generic American mall.
Perhaps the most obvious nod to children and families is Red River Ski Area’s Green Lift. Trails have animal and character whirligigs and kids get free hot chocolate if they can locate them all. Families can also see mining remnants and artifacts from Red River’s turn-of-the-century boom-town days as well as teepees and many Indian artifacts at the Moon Star Mining Camp and Indian Village.
Red River’s first ski area, a rope tow, opened in the early 1940s – and closed, Dec. 7, 1941. After World War II, locals used a rope tow for fun but it wasn’t until 1959 that Oklahoman Stokes Bolton opened Red River Ski Area with a chairlift he built from old oil derricks, a poma lift and rope tow.
