The Studio was founded in 2002 by Barry Norris. Barry Norris has photographed extensively in Chiapas, Mexico where, between 1977 and 1992, he worked as a photographer and printer and raised his family. Moving back to the states in 1992, Barry, his wife, Joan, and son Chan K'in chose San Cristobal, New Mexico as their new home. They kept their home in Mexico
and drive to Chiapas every year to photograph and be with family and friends.
His photography is in private collections worldwide. He has exhibited in New York City, Los Angeles, Austin, Santa Barbara, Santa Fe, Mexico City, San Antonio, Tres Piedras, and San Cristobal de Las Casas. He was associate editor and printer of the book Gertrude Blom: Bearing Witness from Duke University Center for Documentary Photography, 1984. He worked as assistant cameraman and soundman for Festival of Games, a documentary film on Carnaval in San Juan Chamula with director, Thor Anderson in 1979. The Studio, which started out in Barry's home is now a 2000sq ft facility with the latest generation of Epson Printers, computer hardware, scanners, cameras, software and the expertise of a team of three with over 45 years of collective experience, ranging from traditional fine-art photography and darkroom printing to digital color-management and of course, fine-art digital printmaking. First an artwork is captured or scanned. The image is carefully cropped and cleaned. Then they begin the process of proofing. Proofing (color correcting) an image is a skilled and nuanced activity, which requires both an intimate knowledge of the software involved as well as an artistic eye. They proof an image on the medium on which you intend to make your final print. Once they are satisfied with the proof they ask the artist to come in to the studio and approve the print for final output. Only when you, the artist are perfectly satisfied with the proof, and sign-off on it, will it be printed. Giclee, is a term coined by Jack Duganne from the early days of digital printmaking, to describe a fine-art quality ink-jet print.
