Art Mirrors by Mary Alvarado
The frame has endless possibilities, personal and beautiful, odd shaped, or more conventional, and as a reminder of something you love, or that has meaning, whether it be an affirmation, home, something dreamy, or soul-stirring and spiritual. I love to play and dream, so, as an adult, creating these mirrors is a way to keep the joy and imagination in me alive and dancing.
Each frame is made with hardened, sculpted, recycled fabrics. I use everything from t-shirts, lace and jeans to linens and even long johns. I am fascinated by what the textures do in the sculpting/ hardening process, and how paint is affected by these textures.
Embellishments include handmade ceramic faces and abstractions designed and crafted by me, as well as beads, feathers, wood, bark and many other found objects.
Essentially, these mixed media creations are a sculpture, a painting, a collage and a piece of functional art with it's own individual character.
