Red River’s first ski area, a rope tow, opened in the early 1940s – and closed, Dec. 7, 1941. After World War II, locals used a rope tow for fun but it wasn’t until 1959 that Oklahoman Stokes Bolton opened Red River Ski Area with a chairlift he built from old oil derricks, a poma lift and rope tow.
