Izilwane, which means "animals" in Zulu, seeks to enhance the connections between human beings and other species and the natural world. We believe that this will allow us to experience more fully our interdependence with our global ecosystems. It is our hope that this increased awareness will lead to more innovative solutions to the environmental problems facing the world today, including the destruction and extinction of animal and plant species. We are losing approximately 30,000 species each year or three each hour. This event is called the Sixth Great Extinction, because it is the sixth time in the history of our planet that a major extinction has occurred. Most scientists believe that the Sixth Great Extinction is solely or predominantly caused by human beings. The previous five extinctions were caused by extreme physical planetary changes, events outside normal physical and climatic disturbances. Izilwane's Vision from Tara Lumpkin on Vimeo. We believe that each of us can play a role in attempting to reverse this negative trend of losing species. In addition to rigorous science, we posit that sensing and feeling and developing new perspectives (or new ways of perceiving) can help us connect to other species, with nature, and, perhaps, in a better way with other members of our own species – humankind.
