Welcome to the world of DH Lawrence. Here you can explore the life of a great writer, and see how the people and places of Nottinghamshire inspired a miner's son to become one of the 20th century's most important and controversial writers. Even today, more than 70 years after his death, Lawrence remains an enthralling figure. Hailed as a genius by some, labeled an out-of-fashion misogynist by others, he's probably best known for his novels Sons and Lovers and Lady Chatterley's Lover. But he also explored an extraordinary range of emotions and subject matter and was a prolific short story writer, poet, playwright, essayist, translator, painter and man of letters. In 1922, following a trip to Ceylon and Australia, the couple settled in Taos (and San Cristobal), New Mexico, at the invitation of the arts patron, Mabel Dodge Luhan. In Taos they lived on a ranch with Dorothy Brett, an English painter, and became friends with the painters Knud Merrild and Walter Ufer. Lawrence returned to Italy in 1925.
