Mary Ellen Matthews has worked in the fine art of papermaking since the 80’s when she took her first class at the Southwest School of Art and Craft. Her work evolved over the years from wall art, to vessels, to layered sculpture and to books. She has now moved to painting as a way to depict her ”Journey to New Mexico”. The colorful images move the viewer to delight in the idealized landscape and architecture of Northern New Mexico. Matthews’ work has evolved over the years from wall art, to vessels, to layered sculpture, and to books. Her unique hand-made book works have been selected for inclusion in shows at the National Museum for Women in the Arts, the Chicago Public Library, the Museum Santa Maria della Scala, Siena, Italy, the Museum del Corso, Rome, Italy, and a three person show at the Center for Art and Spirituality, San Antonio, Texas.
