Taos artist Mary Barnes paints in her Llano Quemado studio where she invites guests to enjoy 360º of snowcapped mountains and the quiet beauty and solitude of the high desert sagebrush mesa, its peacefulness not unlike that of her childhood home in Appalachian Kentucky.
Holding a B. A. from Thomas More College and a M.E.D from Xavier University with additional graduate and post graduate work from the University of Strasbourg, France, the University of Dayton and Miami University of Ohio, Ms. Barnes spent her employment years in the public schools of Kentucky, Ohio, and New Mexico. Ms. Barnes was a late comer to the art world that she always loved. Fifteen years into her teaching career, she began formal art training at the Middletown Fine Art Center studying under modernist Richard George, NMS watercolorist Ron Bushorn, and retired Miami University adjunct professor of art, Steve Perucca.
Since her first one woman show in 1997, Ms. Barnes has shown her art in southwestern Ohio, northern Kentucky, New Mexico, and Colorado. Her works are found in collections throughout the United States. Her earliest works were signed using her married name Mary Leadingham. During a transition period, she signed her works B-L, and following her divorce MB.
