After studying painting at Columbus College of Art and Design, The Instituto Allende, and Thomas Jefferson College, Jack Smith spent the majority of his thirty year painting career in Western Michigan and the American Southwest, principally Taos, New Mexico. Smith’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and is in public and private collections internationally. Jack Smith has incorporated the black oil medium in his work since the mid-1970s. For a decade, from his Michigan farmhouse attic studio, he studied the technique and handling of this unique approach to painting. The resulting works achieved an Inner Light that he was only able to arrive at with this unique material.
