Nancy Lay
My recent works have progressed down two separate pathways: works in acrylic paint on wood, paper, and canvas, and works in digital graphics. Though the pathways are distinctly separate in their mediums, their focus is the same - the forms of nature. My paintings of floral forms and green-leafed plants underline the deep reverence I feel toward Nature. I seek to portray the beauty and complexity of the Earth's flora. In depictions of wildflowers, I show them against harsh landscapes in order to convey the tenacity of nature. Life will find a way. I have chosen the medium of tissue-paper glazed onto canvas. This creates a layer of texture beneath the paint, adding character to the painting and serving to emphasize my abiding feeling that nothing in Nature is as simple as it seems. We are rewarded with knowledge when we look past the superficial.
In my digital collages, I use the various forms of leaves to convey the vast complexity of life. A leaf is not just an appendage extending from a tree branch. It is a testimony. In and of itself, it tells a story of its life on Earth. In my collages, I extend that story, suggesting directions and outcomes, contexts that mirror our own life journeys and the greater degree of understanding that is available to us.
