Things To Do In Taos
There so many exciting things to do in Taos, New Mexico that it is easy for a first-time visitor to be a bit overwhelmed by all the choices one has. From white water rafting on the Rio Grande, to skiing the black runs at Taos Ski Valley, Taos activities are perfect for lovers of nature and the great outdoors.
Besides experiencing the beauty of our majestic vistas, there are other things to do in Taos that don’t require you to physically exert yourself. If it’s rest and relaxation you re after, Taos has plenty to offer in that arena as well.
Taos Activities
Early Spring, when the runoff from the Winter snows flow into the Rio Grande, is the perfect time to do “The Box” with one of the many experienced river guides who work for various Taos-based rafting companies.
The Rio Grande Gorge viewed from the Gorge Bridge is far more majestic seen from below as you float along the river that winds through the Pueblos of Northern New Mexico. Horseback riding is another favorite activity in Taos during the warmer months and horses can be rented at several stables in the area. Hiking the many trails in and around Taos will ensure you enjoy the amazing views of what once was amazingly, ocean floor!
When your day in the sun comes to an end, stroll through the streets of town and enjoy the Art Galleries and small shops showcasing some of the finest silver jewelry in the Southwest. Once you’ve deposited your shopping bags at your hotel room, it is definitely time to head for the Adobe Bar at the historic Taos Inn, where people watching is a favorite pastime for locals and tourists while enjoying one of the bar’s specialty margaritas. Live music happens here nightly and at other venues around town.

If the Mythic Wild West is what you came for, head for the Stakeout Restaurant at sundown. Rumor has it hat this was Billy the Kid’s hideout and an old haunt of the James Brothers as well. The views from the deck are nothing less than stunning as the sun sets in the West.
Things To Do At Taos Pueblo
Taos Pueblo is just two miles from the center of town and offers a rare glimpse into a timeless culture. Horses and guides are available for rental here and don’t miss the Seasonal dances and ceremonies that draw hundreds of tourists and locals alike. In early July the Taos Pueblo PowWow in the Pueblo Buffalo Pasture is a weekend long celebration of Native culture, bringing Native dancers and revelers from all over America.
Santa Fe
Taos is only one hour from the State Capitol, Santa Fe and the High Road between the two takes you through the charming town of Chimayo where you can visit the famous Santuario that boasts miracle dirt that has affected incredible healings over the centuries. Crutches, wheelchairs and canes line the sanctuary walls; testament to the ones who were spontaneously healed and walked away without the need of their old baggage. Santa Fe is a sophisticated and cosmopolitan community that offers world class art (Site Santa Fe and Canyon Road) and entertainment, the nationally renowned Santa Fe Opera House and luxury goods for sale in the up market shops that line its winding streets.
